Coober Pedy is a famous area for precious opals. Miners dig caves to protect themselves from the heat, and inch their way along seeking this precious bright material. A hundred years ago they were looking for gold, but found this other precious material.

The back shows brown opal matrix, which contrasts with the bright blue opal seam shown on the front--the real magic of opal! This eye-catching vivid blue doublet is wire wrapped in square gold fill wires.
