Michigan's State Gem Chlorastrolite or Greenstone has a green silky chatoyancy, an alligator-like or turtleback-like pattern, sometimes with inclusions of other minerals such as Thomsonite, Datolite, or Prehnite.  Formed in vesicles of volcanic basalt, Greenstones are often small, as in half the size of a pea!  The stones we use for jewelry usually started much larger, and have been ground down in search of the best display of pattern and shine, before they are beautifully wire-wrapped into jewelry for you using the best precious metals available. Greenstones have become quite scarce because old mine rock piles are being crushed and used for gravel.  When you buy a Greenstone pendant, you are investing in jewelry of a rare gemstone.

  • Greenstone Earrings

    Michigan Greenstone (chlorastrolite) is a gemstone found in the Keweenaw Peninsula and on the Isle Royale National Park islands. The official state gemstone of Michigan, it is normally small and well-suited for bead earrings.  The turtle-back or alligator skin patterns of green are characteristics looked for.  Sometimes other minerals can also be found in the greenstone, such as thomsonite.  Our earrings are constructed with 14/20 gold-fill and sterling silver.

  • Greenstone Cabochons

    Chlorastrolite was declared Michigan's State Gem, but it is only found in a small portion of the state, the far north.  It comes from Isle Royale (now a National Park where collecting is prohibited) and from certain copper areas of the Keweenaw Peninsula which juts out into Lake Superior.  Created by volcanic action the host rock is mineral rich and was first valued for the copper found there.  While finding copper, miners also found these small nodules of green, and sometimes they would polish into gemstone beauties.  These are the treasures we crave, starry, well-patterned with geometric, chatoyant variations of dark and light green, and sometimes some pink Thomsonite or other inclusions. Greenstones have become quite scarce because old mine rock piles are being crushed and used for gravel.  When you buy a Greenstone, you are investing in a rare gemstone. Our stones are well polished and ready for use in rings or other jewelry.
